ここ最近、お客様よりご感想をいただく際に、
「紅茶の香りがする。」
という内容を頻繁にいただきます。

 

AQUAの香りを作る際、紅茶のニュアンスは考慮していません。
もちろんピラミッド内にブラックティー（日本語で紅茶の意）やグリーンティなどのノートも含めておりません。

ではなぜ紅茶のニュアンスを感じられるお客様が多いのか、これについて少し調べてみました。

 

Recently, we have been receiving frequent feedback from customers saying, "It smells like black tea," when they share their impressions with us.

When creating the scent of AQUA, we did not specifically consider nuances of black tea. We certainly did not include any notes of black tea or green tea inside the scent pyramid.

However, I conducted a brief investigation to understand why many customers perceive a black tea nuance in the fragrance.

 

 

 

紅茶を感じる要素として、大部分はトップノートに含まれる

レモン / オレンジ / ベルガモット

上記３つの香りによって紅茶のような香りを感じていらっしゃる可能性があります。

 

The elements that evoke the sensation of black tea are largely included in the top notes:

Lemon / Orange / Bergamot

It is possible that the combination of these three scents is creating the impression of black tea-like aroma for our customers.

 

 

 

 

 

というか、そもそも「紅茶」って何でしょうか？

以下コピペです。

紅茶（こうちゃ）とは、摘み取った茶の葉と芽を萎凋（乾燥）させ、もみ込んで完全発酵させ、乾燥させた茶葉。 もしくはそれをポットに入れ、沸騰した湯をその上に注いで抽出した飲料のこと。 なお、ここでいう発酵とは微生物による発酵ではなく、茶の葉に最初から含まれている酸化酵素による酸化発酵である。

なるほど、酸化発酵した茶葉から抽出され、”紅茶”となるようです。
ちなみに全く同じ葉を使用し、酸化発酵させていない茶葉により抽出されたお茶は、”緑茶”になるとのこと。

余談ですが、緑茶 / 紅茶 / 烏龍茶 これらは全て同じツバキ科の常緑樹の茶葉により作られる飲料のようで、元は同じ茶葉でも発酵方法によって味と色、そして香りに変化が生じるそうですよ。

 

"Black tea" is a type of tea that is made by withering and drying freshly picked tea leaves and buds, then rolling them to undergo complete oxidation before being dried. Alternatively, it refers to the beverage obtained by placing these processed tea leaves in a teapot and pouring boiling water over them for extraction. It is worth noting that the term "fermentation" used here does not involve microbial fermentation but rather refers to the oxidation process catalyzed by enzymes naturally present in the tea leaves.

I see, so "black tea" is the tea extracted from tea leaves that have undergone oxidation. On the other hand, "green tea" is produced using the exact same leaves but without allowing them to undergo oxidation.

As a side note, green tea, black tea, and oolong tea are all beverages made from the leaves of the same evergreen tree in the Camellia family. Although they originate from the same tea leaves, differences in taste, color, and aroma arise due to variations in the fermentation methods used during processing.

 

 

 

さてさて、私自身紅茶について全く無知でしたので、色々ざっくり調べてみましたところ,,,

 

まず紅茶にはいくつかの種類が存在します。

・シングルオリジン（茶葉のみの紅茶 →ダージリン / アッサム / セイロンetc）

・フレイバーティー（花やフルーツ、スパイスなどの香りを茶葉につけた紅茶）

・ブレンドティー（2種類以上の茶葉を組み合わせた紅茶）

・ハーブティー（茶葉とハーブを組み合わせた紅茶）

・ルイボスティー （ノンカフェイン紅茶）

 

この内、日本で一般的に”紅茶”と呼ばれているものはフレイバーティーであり、これはダージリンという茶葉をベースに様々なフレイバーを組み合わせたものです。（必ずしも茶葉はダージリンでなくてはならない縛りはない）

さらにフレイバーティーの中でポピュラーな種類が”アールグレイ”であり、ダージリンの茶葉にベルガモットの香りをつけたフレイバーティーがアールグレイに該当します。

このベルガモットで香り付けしたダージリン茶葉に、オレンジやオレンジショコラ、時にはアプリコットやダマスクローズなど、様々なフレイバーを施した紅茶が、元はイギリスから発祥し現在では世界的に拡まっています。

（Fortnum & Mason がイギリスでは有名ですね）

Now, now, I was completely ignorant about black tea, so I did some quick research...

First of all, there are several types of black tea:

1. Single-Origin (black tea made from tea leaves from a specific region or plantation, e.g., Darjeeling, Assam, Ceylon, etc.)
2. Flavored Tea (black tea infused with scents of flowers, fruits, spices, etc.)
3. Blend Tea (black tea made by combining two or more types of tea leaves)
4. Herbal Tea (black tea combined with herbs)
5. Rooibos Tea (caffeine-free black tea)

Among these, what is commonly referred to as "black tea" in Japan is Flavored Tea. This type of tea is based on Darjeeling tea leaves and combined with various flavors (although it's not mandatory for the tea leaves to be Darjeeling).

Furthermore, among the Flavored Tea, "Earl Grey" is a popular variety. It is a flavored tea where the base tea is Darjeeling, and it is scented with bergamot.

This tradition of scenting Darjeeling tea leaves with bergamot and adding various flavors such as orange, orange chocolate, apricot, damask rose, etc., originated in England and has now spread worldwide.

(Fortnum & Mason is famous for this in the UK, right?)

 

 

 

閑話休題。

先に説明したAQUAのトップノートに含まれる

レモン / オレンジ / ベルガモット

上記の香りが、アールグレイティーの香りとニュアンスが近しいため、お客様によって紅茶の香りを感じられるのでしょう。

 

Setting aside the digression, the scents of lemon, orange, and bergamot included in AQUA's top notes are reminiscent of Earl Grey tea, which is why customers might perceive a black tea-like aroma.

茶葉生産から摘み、そして乾燥してフレイバードまで、農家の方が高梁市内で加工し出荷されているようです。

 

成羽美術館の皆様も紅茶のニュアンスを感じていただいて、お取引いただいたのかもしれません。今度お話をうかがってみます。

 

瀬戸内と紅茶は特に親和性ないかと思いきや、そんなこともなさそうですね。

Speaking of black tea...

This year, the Senso del Mare fragrance has been offered at the NARIWA  Art Museum in Takahashi City, Okayama Prefecture. When speaking with the museum shop's representative, I learned that Takahashi City is renowned for its tea leaf production.

It seems that local farmers in Takahashi City are involved in every step of tea production, from harvesting to drying and flavoring, before shipping out their products.

Perhaps the staff at the Seppuku Art Museum also noticed the black tea nuances and that's why they decided to work with us. I look forward to discussing this with them next time.

Although I initially wondered about the compatibility between Setouchi (Inland Sea area) and black tea, it seems like there's a connection after all. Writing this blog post has inspired some great ideas.
