和田寛世さんを最初に見かけたのはロンドン。

在英当時の和田さんは、シューメイキングの技術を持つ日本人アウトワーカーとして現地で働かれていました。

ビスポークシューメイカー、そしてテイラーやサルト含め、受注が自社内の職人のみでこなせない場合、アウトワーカーへ業務委託を行うことは割と一般的です。

和田さんはロンドントップクラスのビスポークシューメイカーより依頼を請け負う靴職人であり、製作からオールソール交換など含め複数のメイカーから仕事を任されていたそうです。

 

I first encountered Wada-san in London.

During his time in the UK, Wada-san worked as a Japanese outworker with expertise in shoemaking. When bespoke shoemakers, as well as tailors and sartorial, have orders that their in-house craftsmen cannot handle, it is quite common to subcontract the work to outworkers.

Wada-san was a high skilled shoemaker who undertook work from some of the top bespoke shoemakers in London. He was entrusted with various tasks, including the production of shoes and tasks such as resoling.

 

 

知り合ったのは恐らく2016年？

そして和田さんのアカウントを見つけ、連絡が始まったのは今年初め。

今思えばこのブログがきっかけでした。

このブログ、意外にPV数多かったんですよね。
ロシアンカーフについて記述したことで和田さんよりリアクションがあり、DMのやり取りが始まりました。

 

I probably met him around 2016?

Then, I found Wada-san's account and our communication started earlier this year.

Looking back, it was this blog that served as the trigger.

Surprisingly, this blog had quite a high number of page views. After I wrote about Russian calf leather, I received a reaction from Wada-san, which led to a direct message exchange.

 

 

変わらずロンドンで生活されていると思いきや、なんと地元の愛媛県に帰省されていらっしゃるとのこと。

これを機にご挨拶も兼ねて会いに行きました。

 

I thought he was still living in London, but to my surprise, he mentioned that he was back in his hometown in Ehime Prefecture.

Taking this opportunity, I went to visit him, both to say hello and catch up.

 

 

 

現在和田さんは、帰国後もロンドンのビスポークメイカーよりアウトワーカーとして仕事を委託されています。

つまりロンドンの注文靴屋が、受注品をわざわざ日本の愛媛県に住む和田さんに送って仕事を依頼しているということです。

当然メイカーからすれば輸送費など相当なコストがかかります。
そのコストを考慮してもなお和田さんに依頼するということが、和田さんの技術がいかに卓越され、アウトワーカーとして信頼されているかを物語っています。

 

Currently, even after returning to Japan, Wada-san continues to receive commissions as an outworker from bespoke shoemakers in London.

This means that bespoke shoemakers in London go through the trouble of sending their orders to Wada-san, who resides in Ehime Prefecture, Japan, to entrust him with the work.

From the perspective of the makers, there are naturally significant costs involved, such as transportation fees. Despite considering these costs, the fact that they still choose to commission Wada-san speaks volumes about his exceptional skill and the trust placed in him as an outworker.

 

 

 

ラスト（木型）とアッパー、インソール、ウェルトなどソールまわりの部材がロンドンより送られ、それらを靴として完成させるまでが和田さんの仕事です。

これはシューメイキング全工程の6割ほどを和田さんがこなしていることになります。

 

この日、手がけていたほんの一部の作業工程を撮影させていただきましたので、少し紹介します。

 

The last (shoe form), the upper, insole, welt, and other components like the sole are sent from London, and it is Wada-san's job to bring them all together to complete the shoes.

This means that Wada-san handles about 60% of the entire shoemaking process.

On this day, I had the opportunity to take some photos of the specific steps he was working on, so I'd like to share a little about it.

 

 

 

ロンドンより送られてきたパーツを「一足の靴」の状態に形作るため、パーツごとに細かい工程を少しづつ加えていきます。

 

To transform the parts sent from London into a complete pair of shoes, He adds intricate steps to each individual component, gradually shaping them into the form of shoes.

 

 

 

写真に写るラストの底面には中底（足の裏が触れるインソールパーツ）が合わさり、完全に底面の形状を沿わすために自転車のタイヤチューブを巻いて密着させます。

革は形状記憶する性質があるため、あらゆるパーツを、所謂”クセづけ”させる必要があります。

 

On the bottom surface of the last captured in the photo, the midsole (the part that comes into contact with the sole of the foot) is fitted, and a bicycle inner tube is wrapped around it to ensure a perfect match with the shape of the bottom surface.

Since leather has a memory-like property, it's necessary to condition all the components, a process commonly known as "breaking in," in order to shape them properly.

 

 

 

インソールに形のクセがついたら、さらにエッジを削ってラストの複雑な局面と面一にさせ段差やズレが出ないよう調整。

 

 

 

 

そこから仮釣りです。
アッパーをラストに被せ、密着しラストに沿わせたインソールを含ませるように釣り込みます。ラスティングペンチで革を引っ張り、釘を打ち込んで固定。これを繰り返し、ラストに沿わせるのです。

 

 

 

この釣り込みはあくまで”仮”で、平面状態のアッパーにクセをつける工程です。
ビスポークシューズにおいて、この釣り込みの工程は非常に大事とのことです。釣り込み、寝かせの工程を丁寧に行わないと、お客様が履いた後に妙なシワや変形が生じるからです。

 

This "hanging" process is strictly provisional and serves to impart a set to the upper, which is initially in a flat state. In the realm of bespoke shoemaking, this hanging process is deemed highly crucial. If not executed meticulously, the consequences can be peculiar wrinkles or deformations after the customer wears the shoes.

 

 

 

ほぼ６時間ほど作業風景を見させていただきましたが、数足分の仮釣り作業をこなされていました。

 

I had the privilege of observing the work process for nearly six hours.

 

 

 

インソールパーツもこの状態は未完成で、今後写真のようにアウトラインに沿って土手（溝）を作り、縫い糸の穴を開ける工程などを行なっていきます。

 

和田さんは完全ワンオペなので、全ての工程は和田さんによる作業のみで完結されます。
一ヶ月内で上げられる足数も当然限りがあります。
目安で何足上げているかをうかがったところ、ワンオペであることを考慮すると作業スピードはかなり早いなと思いました。 

 

The insole component, even in this state, is still incomplete. In the future, steps will be taken to create edges along the outline, as shown in the photo, and to create embankments (grooves) and open holes for stitching thread.

Wada-san operates entirely on his own, so every step is carried out solely by him. Naturally, there is a limit to the number of pairs he can produce within a month. When I asked for an estimate of how many pairs he produces, considering that he works alone, I was impressed by how fast he works.

 

 

 

 

 

数時間雑談をしまして、和田さんのパーソナルな部分も質問しましたところ、和田さんはヨーロッパのクラシックスタイルだけでなく日本の民藝や伝統工芸、靴以外の製造技術も研究するべく工房見学や職人さんの作品蒐集されているようです。

センスが凝り固まることなく知見と見識が多岐に渡り、様々なジャンルの手仕事を取り入れる柔軟さがカッコいいですね。

いつか和田さん独自のミクスチャー・シューメイキングを行なっていただきたいです。

 

After a few hours of casual conversation, I asked Wada-san about their personal interests. It seems that Wada-san not only appreciates European classical styles but also conducts research on Japanese folk art, traditional crafts, and manufacturing techniques beyond just shoes. They engage in activities such as visiting workshops and collecting works from artisans.

His sensibilities remain open and he continuously seeks to broaden his knowledge and perspectives. The flexibility to incorporate various genres of handcrafting is quite admirable.

Someday, I hope to witness Wada-san engage in his own unique blend of shoemaking.

 

 

瀬戸内でいうと関西の神戸は除き、中国四国地方でヨーロッパスタイルのクラシックなドレスシューズをフルハンドで作る靴職人はほぼいないのではないかと思います。
知っている限りでは香川県Spheres Gateの星出さんご夫妻くらい？

なので和田さんはロンドンでご活躍されていたというハイキャリアを持ち合わせた靴職人として、瀬戸内では大変貴重な存在です。

 

Seto Inland Sea areaI believe there are very few shoemakers in the Chugoku and Shikoku regions who handcraft classic European-style dress shoes. As far as I know, there are only Mr & Ms Hoshide at Spheres Gate in Kagawa Prefecture.

Therefore, Wada-san, with his impressive career in London, is an exceptionally rare presence as a highly skilled shoemaker in the Seto Inland Sea region.
