Go'o Shrine by NAOSHIMA Art House Project / 直島 家プロジェクト -護王神社-
SENSO del MAREの取扱店とは関係ないのですが、ベネッセアートサイトを構成するプロジェクトの一つとして、非常に美しい造形である作品を記述させていただきます。
While it may not be related to the distribution of SENSO del MARE, I would like to describe a piece of artwork with a very beautiful form that is part of the projects that make up the Benesse Art Site.
直島の家プロジェクト。
この作品の全ては、直島内に点在していた空き家などを改修し、人が住んでいた頃の時間と記憶を織り込みながら、空間そのものをアーティストが作品化しています。地域に点在する作品は、現在も生活が営まれている本村を散策しながら鑑賞することになります。その過程では、場所の持つ時間の重なりやそこに暮らす人々の営みを感じることでしょう。生活圏の中で繰り広げられる来島者と住民との出会いにより、さまざまなエピソードを生み出しているのもこのプロジェクトの特徴です。都市と地方、若者とお年寄り、住む人と訪れる人とが交流していく中で生まれる新たなコミュニティの在り方を提起する契機になったこの有機的な取り組みは、日々変化しながら進化を続けています。
Art House Project
The Art House Project is an art project underway in Naoshima's Honmura district. It began in 1998 with Kadoya, and currently comprises seven locations: Kadoya, Minamidera, Kinza, Go'o Shrine, Ishibashi, Gokaisho, and Haisha. In this project, artists take empty houses scattered about residential areas and turn the spaces themselves into works of art, weaving in history and memories of the period when the buildings were lived in and used. Going from one of the houses to another, visitors pass through the Honmura district, where everyday life unfolds around them, in the process not only engaging with works of art but also sensing the layers of time and history interwoven in the community and the fabric of local people's lives. A notable feature of the Art House Project is that because viewing it means traversing a zone of daily life, it acts as a catalyst for interaction between visitors and local residents, giving rise to many a memorable episode. A truly organic project that changes day-to-day, it has evolved to present a new model of community, characterized by positive interaction between urban and rural, young and old, residents, and visitors.
その中でも今回記述する作品の護王神社。

2002年に公開されたこの神社は、直島・本村地区の氏神が祀られている同神社の改築にあわせて、本殿と拝殿、また拝殿の地下の石室がアーティスト・杉本博司によって設計されています。
This shrine, which was opened in 2002, was designed by artist Hiroshi Sugimoto as part of the renovation of the main hall, worship hall, and underground stone chamber of the same shrine that enshrines the local deity of the Honmura district on Naoshima Island.
まず本殿へお参りをした後、地下の石室への細い入り口へと案内されます。現在は懐中電灯を渡されますが、石室へのアプローチがとにかく暗く、そして狭いです。
人1人がどうにか入れる細い入り口から入室すると、石室で拝めるガラスの階段より差し込む劇的な日差しが、本当に神様が通る道のように放射線が室内に注がれています。
First, visitors are led to the main hall to offer their prayers, and then to a narrow entrance to the underground stone chamber. Nowadays, visitors are given flashlights, but the approach to the stone chamber is still very dark and narrow.
From an approach that can barely accommodate one person, a dramatic beam of sunlight penetrates into the chamber through a glass staircase that offers a view of the interior, like a radiant path for the gods.

ここから出口へと向かえば、暗く狭いアプローチの先には青い瀬戸内海の海と空が見えます。晴れた日であれば、一層青く輝く海が目を刺激し、微かに聞こえる波音が瀬戸内海の存在をより強調させてくれる空間です。
暗く狭い空間に相対し、開放感のある海の情景とのコントラストが非常に心地よく、目の前に広がる海は自分だけのために存在している景色であるかのような心境にさせてくれます。
If you head towards the exit from here, beyond the dark and narrow approach, you can see the blue Seto Inland Sea and sky. On a clear day, the sea shines even brighter, and the faint sound of waves emphasizes the presence of the Seto Inland Sea, creating a very stimulating space.
Normally, a dark and narrow space can create a sense of confinement and may be uncomfortable for some people, but I think this stone chamber is different. The contrast between the open sea view and the dark and narrow space is very pleasant, and the sea stretching out in front of you can make you feel like it's your own private space.
さて、いきなり何故護王神社の記事を書いたのかというと、この神社の下にある海と砂浜が非常に綺麗で居心地が良く、直島に行ったら大体撮影場所として足を運ぶ場所なので、個人的に好きな作品ということもあり今回記述させていただきました。
出口から飛び込む海がとても綺麗に思え、護王神社からそのまま海に呼ばれたような気持ちになり、そのまま丘を下り砂浜まで出てみたとこと素晴らしく綺麗な環境でした。
The reason why I suddenly wrote about the Gouo Shrine is that the sea and beach below the shrine are very beautiful and comfortable, and it is a place where people usually visit as a photo spot when they go to Naoshima, and because it is a personal favorite, I decided to describe it this time.
The sea that jumps out from the exit looks very beautiful, and I felt as if I was called by the sea from the Gouo Shrine, and when I went down the hill to the sandy beach, it was a wonderful and beautiful environment.
